This year, we did two separate parties for Addy’s birthday. My family had come down for the shower and knew they would be back when baby boy was born, so we didn’t want to make anyone feel obligated to come down again, plus in 96 sq ft we have no where for anyone to stay!
We went up to my parents house in mid September to do a joint birthday party with Addy and her cousin Maira who is 4 weeks older. It was just a family affair, with the aunts, uncles, grandparents and cousins. We went with a Sesame.street/Elmo theme since both girls like the little red guy. We mostly just let the kids run around and play like cousins do, but we also threw in an Elmo piñata. We chose the kind with the ribbons and let all the kids pull, that way the little girls could be more involved since it was their day. We have found anytime there is a piñata to hit, the big kids kind of just take it over and destroy it. We also didn’t want two crying two year olds when Elmo ended up headless. Both girls love the piñata and took turns dragging it around and “feeding” it etc. It was adorable. We filled the piñata with a little toys and candy, again geared toward the littles mostly, but the big kids had some things to enjoy in there too.
My mom and sister made a big italian lunch with ziti and chicken parmesan and we followed it up with of course, birthday cakes! Both girls had a mini cake with the same Elmo topper, and my mom made a larger cake to ensure we had enough to go around. She also put my name and my brother’s girlfriends name on the cake since we recently had birthdays that got kind of missed as well!
Addy did well in the gift department as usual. She got a doctors kit, Anna and Elsa stuffed dolls, coloring book and markers, enrollment in her school soccer program, and an Anna dress. We gave her a backpack style baby doll carrier. She was very pleased, and wore the Anna dress the rest of the day, and to bed. We had to peel it off the next morning!
The next birthday party came on the actual day. Unfortunately with a birthday in Mid October the weather is always kind of crummy. We had planned to just use the grilling patio at the apartment complex and let the kiddos run around. Unfortunately it rained all day and the whole family ended up in our itty bitty place. The kids still had a great time. Addy requested a Froz.en cake this time and after one round of burnt sugar glass, I think it turned out pretty good. I couldn’t get the damn thing out of the pan, but she was pleased nonetheless. This go-round she got a bean bag chair, play dough, a dress and leggings, and a N.abi jr tablet from us. She again was very happy!
We sent Elmo/SS themed goodie bags to school the following Monday along with some primary color cupcakes (funfetti with blue icing anyone!?). That was what she picked and I felt it went well with the Sesame street theme.
She thoroughly enjoyed her birthday this year and while she doesn’t know she’s “aging” she gets that it’s a big deal and relishes in the attention and birthday song singing. I can’t believe my girl is 2.
